The Green Party wants New Zealand to stop using and producing fossil fuels by 2035 at the latest. They want to cut all greenhouse gas emissions quickly, restore native ecosystems to soak up carbon, and help communities most affected by climate change. They also want Māori to have a say in shaping climate plans, and they want to make sure the poorest people are looked after during the shift away from fossil fuels.
“Aotearoa New Zealand will lead the world in reducing gross domestic emissions of all greenhouse gases, and will be on track to end fossil-fuel use and production no later than 2035, through legally binding mechanisms.”
“The Green Party will democratise and decarbonise New Zealand's energy system through: reform of electricity markets; support for community energy ownership and self-determination; legislated cuts in fossil fuel use; electrification of transport and heat”
“Adaptation to unavoidable climate change will be well underway.”

The Green Party proposes cutting power bills through household and community ownership of renewable generation, and creating Kiwipower — a publicly owned Crown entity to build and contract the backup “firming” capacity the system needs when hydro lakes are low or wind drops. It includes zero-interest loans for solar and batteries, a renters’ right to solar, expanded home insulation, and funds for community, public-housing and Māori-housing renewable projects.
