Free, universal healthcare fully funded and publicly owned

The Alliance says all New Zealanders should get high-quality health care that is completely free, at every level of care. They say making healthcare free stops people from getting sicker while waiting because they cannot afford treatment, which they say wastes taxpayer money. They want the health system to be publicly owned with no barriers to access.

Fund community and hospital services as one system rather than separately
Give Māori health providers the option to remain independent with full funding and pay equity
Ensure community and primary care workers receive equal pay to secondary care colleagues under existing collective agreements

Who this affects

People visiting their GP or accessing dental, optical, or audiology services would pay nothing for those appointments under the proposed Community Health Service.

GPs and clinic staff

Existing GP practices could join the CHS, which would take over running costs and employ staff, removing the burden of operating as small businesses.

Māori health providers

Māori health providers would have the option to stay independent while still receiving full public funding and pay equity for their staff.
