Green on Foreign Policy

Independent, principled NZ foreign policy focused on peace and environment

The Greens want New Zealand to take strong, independent positions on the world stage based on human rights, the environment, and non-violence. They say NZ should speak up against wrongdoing by other countries even when it is not in our economic interest to do so. They want to work cooperatively with other countries to tackle climate change, protect nature, prevent conflicts, and reduce global inequality, including cancelling unfair debts owed by poorer countries.

What they say they'll do

  • Advocate for stronger international agreements to protect climate, oceans, and biodiversity
  • Push to make ecocide a crime under international law
  • Focus the New Zealand Defence Force on peacekeeping, disaster relief, and Pacific security rather than combat
  • Establish a centre for training international peacekeepers and supporting peace mediation
  • Work toward trade agreements that respect ecological limits, human rights, and are democratically negotiated
  • Cancel unjust debt and provide unconditional debt relief to reduce global inequality

Who this affects

New Zealanders broadly
The party says NZ would take independent positions on international issues, including speaking out on human rights abuses regardless of trade or political relationships.
Pacific Island communities
The policy prioritises the stability and protection of the Pacific region, with the defence force supporting disaster relief and security for Pacific neighbours.
Exporters and businesses in international trade
Trade agreements would be required to meet environmental and human rights standards and be negotiated transparently and with democratic input.

In their own words

“Criticism of any foreign state or overseas organisation by Aotearoa New Zealand for violation of these principles should never be muted in the name of narrow economic or political interests, or historic affiliations.”
“We will ensure that peacekeeping, disaster relief, humanitarian work and environmental monitoring make up the core of the NZDF's work and prioritise conflict prevention over military force.”
“The Green Party will work toward a global trade regime that respects ecological limits and local cultures, and which contributes to sustainable development.”
